Civic & Sustainable Monumentality
In April 2023, UNSW renamed its former Red Centre building the Anita B. Lawrence Centre, honouring the University’s first woman architecture graduate and the first woman to receive a University Medal. To commemorate the building’s 25-year history, UNSW Built Environment and fjctudio, presented Civic and Sustainable Monumentality, an exhibition and public event reflecting on the building’s architectural and sustainable design principles, its place within the university campus, and Anita B. Lawrence’s pioneering contributions to architecture and acoustics.
The exhibition brought together archival photographs, original drawings, research and essays documenting the building’s evolution from 1998 to 2023. Contributions from Richard Francis-Jones, Marion Burgess, James Weirick and Haico Schepers explored its architectural legacy and broader significance within the built environment.
My role encompassed exhibition graphics, event production and documentation. I supported the research, collation and layout of the exhibition catalogue, bringing together archival imagery, architectural drawings, project texts and essays to document the building’s history and commemorate its 25th anniversary. I also curated the event graphics and display, developing a four-minute looped video combining archival imagery, stop-motion sequences and text to celebrate the building, its design, and the academics and practitioners involved in its creation. Presented on the main screen before and after the formal presentations, the video provided a continuous visual narrative throughout the event.
I further assisted with event videography, edited promotional footage for UNSW’s digital channels, and contributed to pre- and post-event content creation and marketing. This work extended the exhibition beyond the physical event, supporting UNSW’s ongoing promotion of the Anita B. Lawrence Centre and its architectural significance.
