Bolder Chair I & II Exhibition Stand

The project involved the design of a temporary exhibition stand to promote Linde Freya Tangelder’s Bolder Chairs I and II for Destroyers Builders. The stand was designed within a strict 3 m × 6 m footprint, requiring an open, accessible and visually engaging showroom environment that positioned the chairs as the focal elements.

The design sought to translate Tangelder’s approach to furniture and architecture into the exhibition environment. Her practice explores overlooked architectural elements, construction techniques and everyday materials, transforming them into sculptural objects through changes in scale, proportion and context. This became the foundation for the exhibition concept, “Magnifying Reality”, which enlarged and abstracted elements of the chairs and their architectural references to create a spatial interpretation of the designer’s process.

The Bolder Chairs’ distinctive curved tubular legs were deconstructed and reinterpreted as dominant architectural elements within the stand, referencing the scale and rhythm of structural columns. The resulting spatial language used minimal forms, exaggerated proportions and material contrast to draw attention to construction and detail, while maintaining a restrained backdrop for the furniture.

Materiality and colour were derived directly from the Bolder Chairs, combining refined and raw finishes to reflect Destroyers Builders’ philosophy of reframing and revaluing existing materials and architectural elements. The exhibition environment therefore functioned not simply as a display, but as an extension of the furniture itself, allowing visitors to experience the ideas of scale, construction and transformation that underpin Tangelder’s work.

The final proposal created a compact showroom environment that balanced product presentation, spatial experience and brand identity, demonstrating how a limited exhibition footprint could be transformed into an architectural expression of the designer and furniture collection.
